| SUBJECT SELECTION AT A LEVEL
Students are required to choose a minimum of three and a maximum of four subjects from the combinations given below. In exceptional situations, students can be allowed to study additional subjects. In such a case, an additional monthly payment of Rs.1,600/- for every additional subject will be charged. |
The following information intended to help you understand regulations of IBCC which are applicable to students who wish to continue their education in a Pakistani university after their O and A Levels. These regulations are especially important for students willing to study medical or engineering subjects after A Level.
For converting the grades of O and A Levels into F.Sc., marks an equivalence formula is used which considers 8 subjects of O Level (5 compulsory and 3 elective) and 3 A Level subjects (for humanities only 2 subjects are required at A Level). Marks are allotted according to the following criteria:
Grade secured at O or A Level |
Marks (out of 100) |
A |
85 |
B |
75 |
C |
65 |
D |
55 |
E |
45 |
The above formula means that marks secured in a subject of O or A Level carry equal weight so students must show good performance in all the subjects at both levels to score well.
Students can improve their marks by reappearing in a subject (with a poor grade) but that has to be done within one year of first entry, however, equivalence issued once will not be changed.
A student failing in any of the 5 compulsory subjects (already explained) is not eligible to receive equivalence certificate and cannot continue his/her education in Pakistan after A Level. |
Before choosing subjects at A Level please seek advice from those teachers and elders who know about higher education. Make sure that the selection of your subjects is going to augment your possibilities of admission in several universities. However, here are some guidelines:-
Students without Mathematics at A Levels will find many future education opportunities closed to them. So they are advised to choose Mathematics as one of their subjects at the A Levels.
Students willing to seek admission in a good foreign university in the engineering field are advised to study Further Mathematics. However, Further Mathematics would be difficult for students having not studied Physics at O Levels.
Chemistry at A Level is compulsory in so many fields of engineering in Pakistan.
Especially in the U.K. Business Studies is credited half if studied along with Accounting or Economics. However, most of the good universities in the rest of the world (including all universities in Pakistan) take Business Studies as a full subject even along with Accounting and or Economics.
We recommend the students to take only three subjects at the A Level as normally students cannot take the burden of more – scoring 3 A’s is better than 2 A’s and 2 B’s. The fourth subject, however, could be Business Studies, Urdu or General Paper. Urdu as the fourth subject is highly recommended.
The recommended combinations therefore, are:
- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
- Physics, Chemistry and Biology
- Physics, Mathematics and Economics
- Accounting, Mathematics and Economics
- Physics, Mathematics and Computing*
* To take Computing, Mathematics is compulsory at KIMS. Moreover, we feel that students with Mathematics and Computing should also opt for Physics as good universities prefer this combination for admission in IT related fields.
Students can choose other combinations too as long as they do not select any forbidden combinations which are given below:
FORBIDDEN COMBINATIONS OF SUBJECTS!
Biology |
Art & Design; Law; Accounting; Economics; Computing, Business Studies and Thinking Skills |
Chemistry |
Art & Design; Law; Accounting; Economics; Thinking Skills |
Further Mathematics |
General Paper; Biology; Law, Art and Design, English Language AS Level |
Physics |
Art & Design; Law |
Computing |
Law, English Language AS Level/Biology/Thinking Skills |
Accounting |
Art & Design/Biology/Chemistry |
Note: Computing can only be taken with Mathematics.
Students of A Level are normally given a maximum period of one month to decide to add or drop their subjects. Later on they are only allowed to drop a subject provided they read a minimum of three subjects. Subjects may only be added or dropped after the student takes an ‘Add-Drop’ Form from the Student Counsellor and fills it out according to the instructions given at its back and then returns the completed form to the Student Counsellor for necessary action. |
